Carceri d’Acqua

The Carceri d’Acqua series is a visual investigation into the bureaucratic weaponization of natural resources, viewed through the lens of institutional architecture.

In direct dialogue with Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s Carceri d’invenzione (Imaginary Prisons), these collages assemble found imagery of industrial water systems, brutalist concrete, and sun-baked adobe—materials that either violently redirect water or permanently fossilize its absence—into composite prisons of water.

In these works, water is rarely depicted as a symbol of life or purity. Instead, it is treated as a highly regulated, captive asset, forced through a labyrinth of concrete channels, deep cisterns, and mechanical pumps. By naming each piece with an aggressive, clinical acronym—evoking the faceless authority of ministries, hydro-polities, and state monopolies—the series explores the friction between fluid natural systems and the rigid human structures built to trap, ration, and exploit them.

Not merely studies of infrastructure, these pieces stand as monuments to an architectural captivity where water is both the prisoner and the tool of enforcement.
